A Message from the Superintendent

Dear Mill River Families and Community,

It is an exciting time to be part of the Mill River Unified Union School District. I am continually reminded of the many wonderful things happening across our schools and the dedication of the people who make Mill River such a special place to learn and grow.

Our district is filled with students who are curious, creative, kind, and capable. We have teachers and staff who work hard every day to provide meaningful learning experiences, support students' individual needs, and build relationships that help children feel known and valued. Our principals and leadership teams continue to look for ways to strengthen our schools, and our families and communities remain important partners in this work.

There is much to celebrate.

Across our schools, we are seeing continued attention to student achievement in literacy and mathematics. Teachers are using student data more intentionally to understand what students know, where they need additional support, and how instruction can be adjusted to help every learner make progress. We are strengthening curriculum alignment across grade levels and schools so that students experience a clear and connected educational journey from pre-kindergarten through graduation.

We are also listening more closely to our students.

Our students have told us that they want to feel safe, respected, challenged, and connected to their schools. They want opportunities to have their voices heard and to participate in learning that feels meaningful and relevant. Those messages matter, and they are helping shape the work we are doing across the district.

Our District Improvement Plan

One of the most important pieces of our work this year is the implementation of our District Improvement Plan (DIP). The DIP provides us with a clear direction for improving teaching, learning, and the student experience across Mill River.

Our work is organized around three major priorities:

Academic Excellence
Every student will build strong academic foundations.

We are focusing particularly on literacy and mathematics. We will continue to use multiple measures of student learning, including STAR360 and VTCAP data, to monitor progress and identify areas where students need additional support or greater challenge. Our goal is not simply to improve test scores. It is to ensure that every student develops the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful throughout school and beyond.

Belonging & Well-Being
Every student will feel safe, connected, and valued.

Students learn best when they feel that they belong. We will continue to strengthen relationships among students and adults, increase opportunities for student voice, engage families, and create learning environments where students feel respected and supported. We will also pay close attention to student-to-student interactions and the overall culture and climate of our schools.

Engaging Learning for Every Student
Every student will experience meaningful and engaging learning.

We want students to see purpose in what they are learning. This means providing appropriate rigor and relevance, creating more opportunities for hands-on and collaborative learning, connecting learning to students' futures, and making thoughtful decisions about technology. This year, our elementary schools will be looking closely at opportunities to reduce non-curricular screen use while increasing hands-on, collaborative, and experiential learning. Our secondary school will also be observing this work and considering what it may mean for students at the high school level.

These priorities are not separate initiatives. They are connected to one central belief: every student deserves an excellent educational experience, every day.

Looking Ahead

A District Improvement Plan is only meaningful if it becomes visible in classrooms, schools, and in the experiences of our students. This year, our principals, teachers, staff, and district leaders will work together to turn these priorities into action.

We will monitor our progress, look at data, celebrate areas of success, identify where we need to improve, and make adjustments along the way. We will continue to listen to students, families, and staff because improvement is strongest when it is a shared effort.

There is also much happening beyond our academic priorities. Our schools continue to provide students with opportunities in athletics, the arts, music, technology, career exploration, hands-on learning, clubs, and community activities. These experiences help students discover interests, develop confidence, build relationships, and understand that learning extends well beyond the classroom.

I am particularly grateful for the commitment of our teachers and staff. Education is demanding work, and the care they demonstrate for students each day is something that deserves our appreciation. I am also grateful to our families and community members who support our schools in so many ways.

One of my goals is to continue building strong relationships throughout the Mill River community. I want to hear what is working, understand where we can do better, and ensure that our decisions remain focused on what matters most: our students.

There is a great deal to be proud of in Mill River, and there is also important work ahead of us. I believe we can hold both truths at the same time: Let's celebrate what is going well while continuing to challenge ourselves to improve.
